The film called On Our Own, directed by Klára Jakubová, is an interactive program which, with the help of audiovisual stimulants, manages to give us an idea of how people suffering from schizophrenia feel and experience the world. During an approximately 7-minute-long screening, a healthy person can identify with the world of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia and see how it feels to be haunted, threatened, and to hear inner voices. Yet the film enables us to clarify only a fraction of what ill people go through every day. Schizophrenia is characterized by a disintegration of the process of thinking, perceiving and responding emotionally. The patients may feel as if they are being followed, and may experience visual and auditory hallucinations. “The film On Our Own is a window through which we can see how the patient deals with the everyday situations which to healthy people seem very easy,” says associate professor Jan Vevera, expert guarantor of the project. In the European Union, people numbered in the hundreds of thousands suffer or have suffered from this illness. Statistics show that 1 – 2 % of the world population suffer from schizophrenia. Thus the film On Our Own enables the general public, patients’ families and medical students to get a better understanding of the symptoms patients have. Those making this interactive film On Our Own included students and graduates of the Faculty of Art and Design at the University of Jan Evangelista Purkyně in Ústí nad Labem, among them Klára Jakubová and Anna Marešová, under the supervision of associate professor Jan Vevera, Ph.D. The screening is part of the original art installation by Anna Marešová and Lukáš Blažek from the department of product design at the University of Jan Evangelista Purkyne who in their work drew on the motifs of the leading representative of Art Brut and the beneficiary of psychiatric care, artist Zdeněk Košek. After the project Parallel Experiences ends, the film On Our Own will be used as essential teaching material for students at the Psychiatric Clinic of the General University Hospital in Prague and the First Faculty of Medicine at Charles University in Prague. It will also be used during the widely held activities for both professionals and the general public and, most of all, for the families of patients suffering from this illness. This way, they will have a better understanding of the conditions experienced by the patients.
